Restaurant assistant arrested for having 18 blocks of cannabis

KUANTAN: A restaurant assistant from Johor has been arrested for having 18 blocks of compressed cannabis hidden in his car.
Kuantan OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Jasmani Yusoff said the 54-year-old man stashed the drugs in a secret compartment in the car's back seat.
“Acting on a tip-off, police stopped the suspect's car in front of a house in Bandar Damansara here at about 12.41am on Sunday. The man tried to flee but was arrested after a struggle,” he said at the district police headquarters here Monday.
ACP Mohd Jasmani said upon inspecting the car, police found a modified partition under the seat cushion containing what was believed to be 18.61kg of ganja worth some RM55,800.
“Though the suspect has no past criminal records, we believe he has been actively pushing drugs in Kuantan and Johor since May.
“Police also believe there is a syndicate operating through individual runners here,” said ACP Mohd Jasmani, adding that the cannabis were suspected to be brought in from a neighbouring country.
He said the suspect had been remanded and being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries the mandatory death penalty.
