90 medical seats for Indian students, says Palanivel

JASIN: MIC President Datuk Seri G. Palanivel announced that this year Indian students had been allocated 90 medical seats in local universities, compared to 53 in 2011.

"The number of Indian students entering critical fields such as accountancy, mechanical engineering and medicine has increased although their overall enrollment with institutions of higher learning have declined, with only 1,300 students this year, in contrast to 2,000 in 2008," he added.

"We (MIC) request the government to increase the quotas from time to time," he told reporters after opening the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil in Merlimau here, Friday evening.

He then announced a RM2.6mil nationwide allocation by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, under 1Malaysia Development Berhad, for the purchase of photocopiers for all Tamil schools.

The Merlimau Tamil school cost RM4mil and would turn a hundred years old in 2020.

Palanivel also approved RM50,000 for the school's expenditure. - Bernama
