KUANTAN: This is the month to be giving as groups embrace the Ramadan spirit of sharing.

Local NGO Islamic Aid Malaysia (IAM) and Etiqa Takaful Bhd made a stop in Kuantan to distribute goodies to the poor, disabled, single mothers, orphans and senior citizens.

The NGOs presented boxes filled with rice, flour, sugar, cooking oil, milk and other daily necessities to some 200 recipients at Masjid Khairiah Kampung Cherating and Masjid Pandan Dua here on Monday.

IAM president Zawahir Abdullah said the beneficiaries also received a RM50 token each.

“In the joy of celebrating this holy month, we must realise that there are still needy people who practically fast every day of their lives. To these people, hunger is a daily routine.

“We hope our gift can help ease their burden,” he said.

Zawahir added that Pahang was the NGO's second stop and it would continue touring the country for the next three weeks to hand out over 6,000 food packages.

“We will take a week's break to celebrate Hari Raya. Then we will continue the tour, this time to hand out Raya aid,” he said.

IAM later hosted a breaking of fast for children from the Taman Pengasih Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah orphanage.

Meanwhile, Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh and her service centre staff members handed out bubur lambuk to motorists along Jalan Beserah.

She said 400 packets of the Ramadan speciality would be distributed every weekday for the next three weeks.
