JOHOR BARU: Johor will become the first state in the country to have privately-owned CCTVs linked to the state police headquarter's centralised command centre (CCC).

State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said there were about 1,200 CCTVs installed at private companies and business premises to date.

He said linking the CCTVs to the CCC was one of the proactive measures to deter criminals from targeting these companies and business premises.

“We hope the owners will take the opportunity to link to our CCC to reduce crime,” said DCP Mokhtar.

He was speaking at a press conference after holding a dialogue with 50 supermarket and hypermarket owners and operators at the state police headquarters yesterday.

DCP Mokhtar said combating crime was a collaborative effort between the men in blue and members of the public.

He said the cost of linking the CCTVs to the CCC would be borne by business owners, adding that they should not be stingy about it as the move was for their own good.

“They must ensure the CCTVs are in working condition with high quality tapes to ensure the images captured are clear,” he said.

He said shopping complexes and supermarkets should hire sufficient in-house security guards for their premises to ensure the safety of their customers as well as tenants.

DCP Mokhtar said police were willing to work closely with private companies in their hiring of security guards by vetting the applicants' background to ensure they had no criminal record.
