Minister: Only trained newsmen can cover military missions

KUALA LUMPUR: Only reporters who have undergone basic training with the Territorial Army (Askar Wataniah) will be allowed to follow missions with the military, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said pressmen who have completed their training and attached with the Territorial Army’s media platoon would cover nationwide, border and overseas missions.

“Editors are also encouraged to join the platoon,” said Dr Ahmad Zahid in his speech before a ministry buka puasa function.

Members of the media are required to complete 240 hours of training in order to join the media platoon.

Dr Ahmad Zahid added that a team of journalists attached to the media platoon would go to Mindanao with a peacekeeping mission on Aug 27.
