ASP Zainal Abidin said the five friends had come here for an outing over the weekend and were on their way back to Dungun when tragedy struck.

Initial investigations showed that their car had rammed head-on into a lorry laden with iron ore coming out from a junction, he said.

“Another car hit them from behind,” he said, adding that three of them were pinned in their seats and died instantly.

The other two victims were rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.

ASP Zainal Abidin said lorry driver Abdul Razak Mehat, 43, and the driver of the other car escaped unhurt.

Meanwhile in Bentong, a couple were killed when their motorcycle skidded and hit an on-coming car at KM7.5 of the Karak-Kuala Pilah road near Sri Telemong on Saturday.

Mechanic P. Kiru, 21, and B. Anita, 27, died on the spot while their son K. Thirumugilan, three, has been warded at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh with serious injuries.
