NRD: Some parents clueless on procedures

KUALA LUMPUR: Shame and not understanding the law are among the reasons parents delay or don't register their children's birth.

This has resulted in many kids having to grow up without having personal documents.

National Registration Department (NRD) Director-General Datuk Jariah Mohd Said said some parents, especially those with foreign spouses or illegitimate kids, did not know that they were required to register their children's birth.

“Sometimes, there are cases of mothers not knowing where the father of their child is, as well as cases of unmarried couples.

“These parents are ashamed to come to the NRD.

“They are afraid people will ask them questions and this concerns their pride and morality,” she told reporters after attending the Street Children programme at Chow Kit here yesterday.

Jariah said it was compulsory under the National Registration Act 1959 to register the birth of all children. - Bernama
