Homeless forced into cheap labour

THE homeless employed by security companies are the ones most vulnerable to abuse, said Nyanam Arulandu, the coordinator of Urban/Rural Poor and Migrants and Refugees of the Archdiocesan Office for Human Development (AOHD) .

The victims, both men and women, are given jobs in these firms and are lowly paid.

To make them dependent on their employers and work long hours, cheap alchohol is made easily available to them.

Once hooked, they stay on.

“Many victims of such forced labour eventually turn up at the AOHD office with no place to go to and addicted to alchohol.

“There are many such cases. They come to the city looking for jobs but get cheated by rogue agents. As such it is important for the Government, such as the Human Resources Ministry, to come up with measures to screen agents and conduct regular spot checks on firms,” said Nyanam.
