KUALA LUMPUR: Laws are being drafted for renewable and efficient energy to be implemented by the various industries by 2014 said Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry's Secretary-General Datuk Loo Took Gee.

She said that discussions were currently underway with stakeholders and industry players before the Energy Efficiency Bill is tabled in Parliament.

"The law will be looking at the use of renewable and efficient energy by the industries including the construction sector," she told reporters after officiating the two-day 3rd Tropical Subtropical Green Building Alliance Conference here on Wednesday.

She cited the example where developers would have to switch from non-energy efficient incandescent bulbs to energy efficient lighting for buildings in the future once the law comes into effect.

"We will notify those in the industry that certain non-energy efficient items would not be imported into the country to allow them time to switch to more efficient methods," she added.

Since 2009, over 70 buildings nationwide covering 26mil square feet have been accredited as green buildings.
