Khaled: Undertake research for public and nation's benefit

By AMINUDDIN MOHSIN

PUTRAJAYA: The Higher Education Ministry distributed more than RM170mil in funds to 1,425 research projects at private and public higher learning institutes (IPT).

Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said both scientific and non-scientific research were important to a progressive nation.

He stressed that research should bring some form of benefit to the public and nation and not be carried out for the sake of researching.

"In relation to this, the ministry has established an action committee to gauge the impact of research expenditure, especially by research universities, on the development, progress and transformation of the nation," he said.

Khaled urged IPTs to establish two new positions within their institutions to help generate funds through business opportunities provided by research findings.

"They should have a Chief Innovation and Technology Officer and a Chief Investment Officer to help with the commercialisation aspects of research output," he said.
