THE UNFORTUNATE demolition of the former Majestic Theatre will hopefully be the last time that a building with heritage value is torn down in Ipoh.

To ensure the incident does not repeat itself, Datuk Bandar Datuk Roshidi Hashim said Ipoh has a total of 114 buildings and monuments with heritage and historical value.

“This list has been approved by the state executive council for preservation.

“The gazetting of these buildings and monuments will be carried out in a matter of time,” he told reporters after chairing the council’s monthly full board meeting on Wednesday.

Among them are the Ipoh High Court building, the Church of St John the Divine, the former Jubilee Park and old Lido Theatre.

“Those who wish to develop or renovate these buildings must first consult the council.

“We will advise them on the best method to go about it and on how to preserve these buildings, be it complete preservation, preservation of their façade or reconstruction according to the original design,” Roshidi said.

Last month, members of the public were shocked over the destruction of the former Majestic Theatre on Jalan Chamberlain for redevelopment purposes.

The developer has since been slapped with a stop-work order by the council for its failure to obtain a permit before pulling down the building, which dates back to the 1930s.

On this, Roshidi said the developer had contacted the council on July 3 and expressed remorse over the incident.

“The council is in the process of scheduling a meeting with the developer to determine the next course of action.

“I am also waiting for a report from the council’s architect before deciding on whether to haul the developer to court,” he said.

The developer, he added, could be fined up to RM50,000 if found guilty under the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974.

Roshidi also warned other developers not to repeat the mistake that led to the Majestic Theatre incident, adding that drastic action would be taken against them.
