Protest over demolition order for Hindu temple


RESIDENTS in Hutan Melintang district near Tanjung Malim, Perak, held a peaceful demonstration after learning that the 100-year-old Sri Maha Mariamman temple is set for demolition to make way for shophouses, Makkal Osai reported.

One of the residents, P. Thiagarajan, said the Perak government should allow the temple to exist and an alternative site be given to build the shophouses.

He said letters of appeal had been sent to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and district officers.

> Tamil Nesan reported that a four-year-old boy, who was reported missing near Palladam, in Tamil Nadu, was found murdered at a neighbour's house on Monday.

Police have arrested the father's lover and her friend for the murder.

It was reported that the father, Gobinath, was having an affair with Mahalakshmi, 19, and she pestered him to marry her. He refused stating that he had a son.

She decided to kill the boy, whom she considered an obstacle to their relationship, and sought the help of her friend Palanisamy.

They killed the boy by drowning him in a water drum and hid the body in the kitchen under logs and old clothes.
