Fog causes travel chaos across New Zealand
WELLINGTON: New Zealand's main international gateway was thrown into a second day of disruption on Friday with a persistent dense fog enveloping the city of Auckland.
Auckland Airport, which handles the bulk of the country's international air traffic, again posted a notice across the top of its website warning of flight delays due to the fog, which affected flight schedules around the country, China's Xinhua news agency said.
By 10am Friday, 14 domestic flights had been delayed and five cancelled - mostly to or from regional centres - and two international flights had been rescheduled due to the Auckland fog.
Travellers queued in the airport's domestic terminal to arrange alternative flights or transport.
On Thursday, more than 50 flights were cancelled and about 30 delayed due to fog.
Fog at Christchurch International Airport also caused flight delays and cancellations on early Friday.
The fog had been lingering in parts of Auckland and the neighbouring Waikato region for up to 36 hours, according to WeatherWatch.co.nz.
WeatherWatch head weather analyst Philip Duncan said light winds earlier Friday indicated the fog should clear later in the day.
"We need the breeze to move in and clear this fog away - it failed to arrived yesterday in any widespread way across Auckland and Waikato which is why some areas never saw the fog lift," Duncan said in a statement. - Bernama
