For me, Malaysia is paradise on earth

I HAVE had the honour of living in Malaysia for almost four years now and until recently, I never knew there was such a thing as the “Ugly Malaysian.”

All this recent talk of such a thing has me totally perplexed.

Walking down almost every street in the city and having Malaysians of all creed and colour smiling at me? That’s ugly?

No matter where I go, I not only get smiles, I get cheerful hellos, nice chit-chat which many times turn into complete conversations, and doors and lifts held open for me. That’s ugly?

Going through lines in almost any store and often being allowed ahead of other, sometimes more deserving people? That’s ugly?

My list could go on and on, but my point is simply this: I have never, ever associated the word “ugly” to anything that has to do with Malaysia. In fact, it’s just the opposite for me.

There are rude people everywhere in the world, but out of all the countries I have travelled to, Malaysians treat me better than any people, anywhere. I believe it all has to do with attitude; one’s attitude towards others. As it’s been said many times, you reap what you sow.

Again, I have experienced nothing but joy and happiness from the Malaysians I come in contact with, and continue to have contact with.

As long as things remain that way for me, this American will continue living in my great, adopted country.

They say that there is no such thing as utopia. However, with that being said, Malaysia is my paradise on earth!
