Motorist runs away and leaves son at roadblock

SANDAKAN: Road Transport Department officers mounting a roadblock here were stunned when a man ran out of his car, leaving his 12-year-old son in the vehicle.

Officers had to calm down the boy, who broke into tears after realising that he had been left behind at the roadblock some 3km from Sandakan, and sent him back to his home at the MPS Karamunting flats.

The car's road tax was later found to have expired last year.

It was among two vehicles seized during the joint operation by the state JPJ along with the police, Puspakom and National Anti-Drugs Agency at 8pm on Wednesday.

State JPJ director Mohd Suhaili Mohd Taufek said 97 summonses had been issued for various traffic offences during the operation, including invalid road tax and driver's licence.

He said five people were also detained after testing positive for drugs.

Personnel from the department had also rode in 71 express buses between July 27 and Wednesday in a bid to clamp down on reckless driving.

“Nineteen summonses were issued. The offences include using handphones while driving, jumping traffic lights and dropping off and picking up passengers in restricted zones,” he added.
