KUALA LUMPUR: While better known as an online sandwich delivery service, Simply Sandwiches, has set up stall at the Ramadan bazaar for the fasting month.
The sandwich-making duo of Shaheera Djafar, 26, and Sharin Shariff, 30, rolled out a new sandwich for the occasion, namely the Tapau Rollup' a tortilla wrap stuffed with teriyaki beef or black pepper chicken and salad.
“Most people come to Ramadan bazaars for food like kuih muih, popiah and rice dishes, but we're getting customers who are curious to try something new, and healthier,” said Shaheera.
Simply delicious: (From left) Shaheera and Sharin preparing ‘Tapau Rollup’ sandwiches at their stall at the TTDI bazaar. They use wholemeal tortillas and avoid mayo for the sandwiches which also come with satay sauce on the side.
“The beef and chicken filling is made from scratch and we prepare the marinade ourselves,” she said, adding that they ensure not too much salt and sugar is used.
“We usually run the delivery service part-time, but for the Ramadan period, we're running the gerai' full-time. In fact, we stopped deliveries to focus on this,” she said.
They initially set up a stall in the Bangsar and Kelana Jaya bazaars and are now at the TTDI bazaar here.
Shaheera and her business partner Sharin met when studying in Sydney and were amazed by the sheer variety of fresh sandwiches available.
“It is very hard to find good sandwiches locally so we wanted to introduce them here,” said Sharin.
She added that having a physical presence was also a good marketing tool to reach customers who have not heard about them.
