PETALING JAYA: MCA has slammed Pakatan Rakyat's decision to have a separate National Day theme, pointing out that it will tarnish the celebration.

MCA deputy organising secretary Datuk Heng Seai Kie said it is a clear attempt by Pakatan to create chaos within the country and destroying unity at the expense of damaging the sanctity of Merdeka day.

“The celebration of independence is meant to unite the people, but the actions of Pakatan in stirring up issues and inciting anger is turning this occasion into an international joke,” she said in a statement yesterday.

The four Pakatan states had decided to go ahead with its own National Day theme of Sebangsa, Senegara, Sejiwa (One Nation, One Country, One Soul).

They can use their respective state's theme as a co-theme, said PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali on Thursday.

In describing it as “plainly intolerable”, Heng, who is also Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister, called on all Malaysians to stand up and reject Pakatan's theme and fully embrace the Federal Government's theme of Janji Ditepati (Promises Fulfilled).

She also called on Pakatan leaders to behave rationally, pointing out that despite political differences, everyone is a Malaysian and as such, it is important that the Merdeka Day celebration should not be politicised.

“By having different themes at state level, this may create confusion and worse still, cause friction amongst the rakyat which will affect national unity,” she said.
