PUTRAJAYA: Plans to organise the Janji Bersih gathering at Merdeka Square on Aug 31 must first get the go-ahead from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

He said it is DBKL's prerogative to grant permission to use the historic grounds as its management falls under its jurisdiction.

“The organisers must follow procedure and apply formally to DBKL to use Dataran Merdeka.

“There is no difference from the last time, as Dataran Merdeka belongs to DBKL,” he said at a breaking of fast dinner with Immigration Department officials here.

Bersih 2.0 co-chairman Datuk A. Samad Said announced on Friday that they will organise another gathering at the square on the eve of National Day, as part of their efforts to “remind” the public of the eight demands for electoral reform that led to the contentious Bersih 3.0 rally last April 28.

They intend to get the ball rolling at Merdeka Square at 10pm, starting with poetry recitals by Samad, who is a national laureate.

When asked if the planned gathering could end up clashing with the public who will throng the square on Aug 31, Hishammuddin said he was confident the police would do the necessary to protect the public.
