PASIR MAS: Paralysed from the waist down, Mustapha Mohamad used to wallow in self-pity and felt the world was cruel because nobody wanted to give him a job.

One day, while staring down an irrigation canal near his house in Kampung Gelang here, it dawned on him that this waterway could be his way out of the doldrums.

Armed with an idea and true grit, he told his family he would not beg nor be dependent on anyone anymore.

He persuaded them to give him RM3,000 and started to build floating cages measuring 3m by 4m each which he placed in the canal to rear ikan keli (catfish). This was in 2006.
