Highways choked as thousands head home for Hari Raya hols

KUALA LUMPUR: The North-South Expressway and highways throughout the country remained clogged as traffic volume increased in the afternoon due to the Hari Raya Aidilfitri 'Balik Kampung' exodus.

A spokesman from the Plus Expressway Bhd Traffic Control Centre said traffic from Senai in Johor heading to Kuala Lumpur and from Seremban heading to Kuala Lumpur came to a crawl since 3.40pm due to rain.

Traffic congestion was also reported along the North-bound sectors of Slim River to Sungkai and Ipoh to the Menora Tunnel.

"Contra flow was opened at 3.25pm from Km350 to 346.5 (Sungkai to Bidor) to ease traffic flow," said the spokesman.

The spokesman also reported that traffic along the Duta Toll Plaza and Elite Highway was slow but smooth.

Motorists can get the latest traffic reports on the Plus Expressway by contacting the toll free Plusline at 1800-88-0000 and Twitter through the www.twitter.com/plustrafik account. - Bernama
