Cops: Do not believe postings of speed trap locations in blogs, facebook

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have advised motorists to ignore postings on blogs and facebook that claim to have details of speed trap locations in conjunction with Aidilfitri.

Police in its facebook page said postings of locations for speed trap and CCTV cameras set up by police was not true because police do not have a permanent location for speed traps or cameras.

"We want to advise motorists to not believe postings on blogs or facebook," said a police statement on facebook.

Such postings had been uploaded two days before Op Selamat was launched by Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar on Aug 10.

Police said postings on the facebook titled 'Speed Trap Locations in conjunction with Aidilfitri 2012 PLUS' claimed that police had set up speed traps at 40 locations along the North-South Expressway, New Klang Valley Expressway and (NKVE), ELITE Highway and Kesas Highway.

Meanwhile, police also said Ops Selamat, which focused on safety on roads and property of house owners who returned home to their respective villages during the Aidilfitri, had shown positive results.

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Director Datuk Salleh Mat Rashid said based on statistics from last year, there was a drop in the number of cases.

"What I can say is that there has been a drop in the number of accidents and loss to property thus far. Police will release the actual figures once the Op Selamat ends," he said after a gotong-royong session to cook lemang, ketupat, rendang and dodol, all traditional delicacies during Aidilfitri, at Markas Bridged Tengah Pasukan Gerakan Am (PGA) here on Saturday. - Bernama
