Storm blows away roofs of 22 houses
ALOR SETAR: The roofs of 22 houses in two adjoining housing estates in Jalan Kuala Kedah were blown away by heavy rain and strong winds.
The rain began at about 2.30am yesterday and fell until dawn, damaging 14 houses in Taman Pelangi and eight in Taman Mega here.
A resident of Taman Pelangi, Ahmed Bahrom, 61, said his family was rudely awakened at 2.45am by the rain and wind.
“I saw the plaster ceiling in the living room peel off bit by bit until everything came down and the roof had been completely blown off,” said the ex-serviceman.
Another resident of Taman Mega, Sufiah Ahmad, 58, also lost his roof.
An initial estimate by the Kuala Kedah Umno division placed the total damage, including household furniture at RM200,000.
Its vice-head Datuk Abdul Mutholib Harun led a 20-member squad to help the victims.
“We helped to clean up the debris as well as the water that had entered the houses. We also assisted the victims in lodging police reports and applying for aid from the Social Welfare Department.”
Abdul Mutholib also handed over cash donated by the Umno division chief Datuk Latt Shariman Abdullah to the heads of the 22 households.
Latt Shariman, who is advisor to the Kedah Red Crescent Society of Malaysia, donated 22 canvas sheets as temporary roofs. - Bernama
