S'gor MCA: Dong Zong being narrow-minded

PETALING JAYA: The Selangor MCA has accused Chinese educationist group Dong Zong of being narrow-minded in the matter of the Kuantan Chinese independent school.

"Dong Zong deputy chairman Chow Siew Hon should avoid looking at the Kuantan Chinese independent school issue too narrowly, and he should instead be more optimistic and adopt a more open mind," said Selangor MCA Youth chairman Dr Kow Chong Wei.

In a statement Wednesday, he said that under the Education Act 1961, schools with Malay as the medium of instruction were known as national secondary schools while schools with English as the medium of instruction were known as national-type secondary schools.

Secondary schools which use other languages as their medium of instruction were known as independent secondary schools.

The decision to approve the setting up of a Chinese independent high school came months after two rallies by Chinese non-governmental organisations in Kuantan for one.

"From having 60 independent schools before this, the fact that the Education Ministry has approved an increase in the number of Chinese independent schools is a huge breakthrough for the Chinese community. This is good news.

"Dong Zong should be happy and accept this fact instead of speaking nonsense," said Dr Kow.

He also called on Dong Zong to work together with the party in ensuring smooth going in the start up of the new school for the sake of the children's education.

"All MCA wants is to see the success of the Kuantan Chinese independent school, and MCA and the Chinese community in Pahang will never sell out on Chinese education, let alone allow it to disappear.

"It is hoped that all quarters work together for the well-being of Chinese education," he said.
