Ileana becomes hurricane off Mexican coast

MIAMI: Ileana swirled into a hurricane off Mexico's Pacific coast late Wednesday, though it posed no threat to land, US forecasters said.

As it blew over the open waters 335 miles (540 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, Hurricane Ileana had top winds of 75 miles per hour, making it a category one hurricane on the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale.

The National Hurricane Center said Ileana, which was moving northwestward at nine miles per hour, would weaken in a day or two.

"No significant change in intensity is expected during the next 12 to 24 hours, but a gradual weakening should begin thereafter," the Miami-based NHC added. - AFP
