Work as one for a brighter future, says Chua

PETALING JAYA: Reject saboteurs and show the world that the nation is highly cohesive and appreciative of its past glories, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

In his Merdeka Day message, he called on Malaysians to be proud of the country's achievements and fly the Jalur Gemilang at their homes, offices, buildings and on vehicles.

“We are hopeful that there is a brighter future for everyone if we work together as one,” he said in a statement yesterday.

In calling on Malaysians to distance themselves from destructive elements which do not benefit the nation, Dr Chua lamented that there were attempts by certain quarters to test peace and harmony.

He said such attempts had been camouflaged as efforts to champion causes like political reforms or other issues to generate support for destructive purposes.

He said that while there was room for dissent, the sanctity of peace must be respected and Malaysians should be mindful of undesirable elements.

“The Government's effort will be derailed if our country is faced with hostility and stricken by unrest and troubles. We should say no to saboteurs who frighten off investors,” he said.

He said this year's Merdeka theme of 55 Years of Independence, Promises Fulfilled was timely to remind the people of the years of peace, stability, prosperity and development the country had accomplished.

“Such success is not achieved overnight but through years of challenges, tribulations and determination.

“We have to constantly remind ourselves what solidarity means to the nation, that it transcends every race, every culture and every religion.”

He said Merdeka Day mirrored all the achievements of the nation which would not have been possible without the sacrifices of the country's forefathers.

“What we sowed more than half a century ago is now bearing fruits. We should allow the seeds from these fruits to generate more growth and progress for Malaysia.

“The soil that we have ploughed is now fertile and we should reject saboteurs from destroying these fields,” he said.
