Maiza’s Merdeka Special at 55 sen

KUALA TERENGGANU: While others decorate their homes and premises even their vehicles with the Jalur Gemilang to show patriotism, restaurant owner Maiza Mohamad does it by offering Malaysia's staple food at a special price.

Commemorating 55 years of independence, the 33-year-old is selling his “Merdeka Special” roti canai, roti telur or teh tarik at 55 sen at his restaurant called Awang Roti Canai in Bukit Tunggal here.

The interesting promotion, which includes a free Malaysian flag for every customer who orders the menu, is valid until National Day.

Maiza explained that it was his first time having such a promotion after 10 years of running his business.

“Normally, the roti canai is sold at 80 sen, roti telur at RM1.30 while the teh tarik is sold at RM1.

“But I am pricing them at 55 sen to celebrate Merdeka,” he said yesterday.

“All three food items have become part of the country's identity ... It is only fitting that I have the promotion,” he said.

Since the first day of the promotion on Wednesday, Maiza's customers have more than doubled.

“Usually, I would have about 200 customers daily but it has reached close to 500 since the first day.”
