Malaysia, North Korea pledge to strengthen bilateral ties

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and North Korea have stressed their commitment to strengthen and expand bilateral cooperation following the first meeting of officials of the two countries in Pyongyang on Thursday.

The Malaysian delegation was led by Foreign Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahman while North Korea by its Deputy Foreign Minister, Pak Kil Yon.

"During the talks, the two sides exchanged views on bilateral, regional and international issues of common interest.

"Both sides were satisfied with the development of bilateral ties considered to be cordial," a Foreign Ministry statement said.

Malaysia and North Korea also agreed to hold special events to mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries next year.

"Both sides agreed to continue to cooperate in bilateral issues of common interest at international level, especially at the United Nations and Asean Regional Forum."

Mohd Radzi also made a courtesy call on the Vice-President of the Supreme People's Assembly, Yang Hyong Sop.

During the call, Yang said he appreciated the humanitarian aid given by Malaysia during the food shortage faced by North Korea.

"He hopes that bilateral ties between Malaysia and North Korea will continue to reman strong and expand in future," said the statement. - Bernama
