Leather is the ‘in’ thing

JOHOR BARU: Leather baskets for hampers are now the “in” thing for Hari Raya, replacing the widely-used rattan and plastic baskets.

Hamper shop proprietor Azizah Jaafar, 39, who has a stall at Larkin Perdana here, said dark-coloured leather baskets with leather trimmings were in demand this year.

“Most of my customers want leather to be incorporated into their hampers as they feel that it looks more exclusive,” she said.

Azizah added that her shop had received 30,000 orders for Hari Raya hampers.

“My clients want something unique and they prefer choosing their own trimmings, colours and decoration so that their hampers will look different from those found at hypermarkets,” she said.

Azizah said the prices of her hampers ranged between RM50 and RM1,000.

She added that she would usually include Hari Raya cookies, such as pineapple tarts, as part of the gifts inside the hamper.

Azizah added that some customers also preferred other gifts to be included in the hampers, such as kain songket, lending it a more personal touch.
