Merdeka comes early for Kg Baru folk

KUALA LUMPUR: Merdeka Day may be weeks away but flags and buntings bearing the Jalur Gemilang are already up in many parts of the Klang Valley.

Besides the Jalur Gemilang, buntings and banners carrying images of the hibiscus and the 1Malaysia logo are also up.

Not only are business premises decorated, the public have also put up the Jalur Gemilang at their neighbourhoods and homes.

In Kampung Baru, residents have already made the neighbourhood dazzle in red, white, yellow and blue to reflect the colours of the national flag.

A check around the area yesterday saw the Jalur Gemilang mounted on poles in almost every home at the PKNS flats along Jalan Tun Razak and the Ramadan bazaar near Jalan Raja Abdullah.

Kampung Baru resident Azhar Muhammad said although putting up the flags was an annual thing, the people there had started early this year. “I think it is appropriate as we will also be celebrating Hari Raya before the Merdeka celebrations this year.”

Some houses also put up Federal Territory and Selangor flags to add more vibrance to the rows of flags.

“We look forward to having flags put up every year as it creates a festive air in the neighbourhood.

“During other celebrations our decorations are restricted within each other’s houses only,” said a resident who wanted to be known only as Hassan, 32.

The flags had been raised in line with the Kibar Jalur Gemilang programme, launched there by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin last month.
