Maintain low accident rate for coming festive seasons, says Kong
LUMUT: The Transport Ministry hopes the lower number of road accidents during Hari Raya can be maintained or reduced further during other festive seasons.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the road accident statistics announced recently by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar showed that awareness programmes and campaigns have been successful.
"These strategies (campaigns and briefings) have made motorists more aware on the importance of safety, including the lives of passengers.
"Besides that, early exposure on road safety to primary school students is also seen as a contributing factor towards the drop in accident rates throughout Ops Selamat (the road safety operation held in conjunction with Hari Raya)," he told reporters after attending the 2012 Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Aidilfitri Tour at the Chinese Culture Hall, Kampung Datuk Seri Kamaruddin, near here Saturday.
A total of 226 fatal accidents and 243 deaths were recorded during Ops Selamat compared to 259 fatal accidents and 289 deaths throughout Ops Sikap 24 last year.
Ops Selamat, launched on Aug 12 and ended on Aug 26, registered an 8.5 per cent drop in accidents, or 1,669 cases, from 19,606 cases during the same period last year. - Bernama
