PETALING JAYA: More than US$180,000 was allegedly channelled to Suaram by an American organisation said to be linked to George Soros.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob claimed Monday that ongoing investigations by his ministry discovered three letters dated Oct 17, 2007, Dec 18, 2008 and Feb 12, 2010 stating the awarding of grants amounting to US$188,775.65 from an organisation called the Open Society Institute to Suaram.

The letters, he said, also indicated that Suaram, which is not registered under the Registrar of Societies, had received the grant amounts.

"As an unregistered society, it is illegal for Suaram to receive money like this, " he said.

He said that while the ministry can only investigate the matter, he hoped Bank Negara would take action should the allegations prove to be true.

Ismail Sabri said this to reporters after handing out the 1Malaysia Students Discount Cards (KADS1M) at Universiti Malaya here.
