Gearing up for floods

KOTA BARU: The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) is gearing up for floods at the end of the year as more rain is expected during the monsoon season starting October.

Its director-general, Datuk Ahmad Husaini Sulaiman said the department was in constant contact with the Meteorological Department on weather conditions.

He said the DID was examining equipment and systems used to monitor water level in major rivers throughout the country as one of the measures to alert the public in the event of floods.

"The equipment must be in tip-top condition to enable us to record and forecast the situation.

"This is a yearly affair in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang," he told reporters after attending the opening of the annual DID Senior Management Conference here on Monday.

On coastal erosion, he said the department would deliberate on measures to overcome coastal erosion, particularly in several areas in the east coast of the peninsular as they faced the South China Sea. - Bernama
