Blasts rock seven Corsican supermarkets, no victims

AJACCIO, France - A series of explosions rocked seven supermarkets on the French island of Corsica overnight Monday, claiming no victims and causing only minor damage, police said.

The blasts hit supermarkets in Ajaccio and Upper Corsica. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

An AFP journalist said the entrance to the main Leclerc supermarket in downtown Ajaccio was destroyed by an explosives charge, but the damage seemed to be limited.

In Bastia the windows of another supermarket in the Leclerc chain were broken and the metal screens smashed, another correspondent said.

Police cordoned off the damaged buildings and anti-terrorist investigators were called in from Paris.

The holiday island of Corsica, with a population of 306,000, has more supermarkets per head than any other region of France and plans for a new hypermarket in the suburbs of Ajaccio were abandoned last year after many complaints.

In recent years there have been numerous bombings by the Corsican National Liberation Front (FLNC) but they have mainly targeted holiday homes. - AFP
