SPNB manager charged with abusing position to secure contract
By DERRICK VINESH
BUTTERWORTH: A Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) manager was charged in a Sessions Court here with using his position to secure a RM195,000 contract to repair houses.
Mohamad Radzi Shaari, 42, from Batu Caves, Selangor claimed trial to using his position as SPNB northern region manager to suggest Aman Enterprise for the Skim Perumahan Mesra Rakyat contract in Kedah with the knowledge that the work would be carried out by his brother, Mohd Sohimie Shaari.
He was said to have committed the offence at the SPNB Northern Region office at Level 5, Wisma Umno, Lorong Bagan Luar, Butterworth in September 2008.
The charge under Section 15(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997 carries a jail term of 14 days to 20 years and fine not less than five times the amount or value of the corruption charge or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
DPP Janariah Abdul Mutalib pressed for a RM120,000 bail based on the value of the contract.
Mohamad Radzi's lawyer Shahrullah Khan pleaded for leniency saying that the accused's other brother Md Zin Shaari, who would post the bail was an oddjob worker in the village, and that he could not afford to pay high bail.
Judge Ikmal Hishan Mohd Tajuddin set bail at RM20,000 with one surety at fixed mention on Oct 15.
