Set up crisis relief squads to enhance security, says Chor

By JOSEPH SIPALAN

PUTRAJAYA: Resident associations can set up crisis relief squads like in several areas in Kedah to enhance security in their neighbourhoods, said Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung.

He said such a squad, like the one started by volunteers in Sungai Petani, Kedah, has been very successful has since spread to his parliamentary constituency in Alor Setar.

“Today in Alor Setar, the squad has 480 members. They realise they have no power to arrest but take turns to go around on bikes in their neighbourhood and I supplied them with walkie-talkies so that they can keep constant communication.

“The police see these people as frontliners. Whether there is a case or not, these volunteers will go (to the scene) first before the police arrive," he said at the ministry's Hari Raya open house.
