GEORGE TOWN: Due to the overwhelming number of visitors that throng the God of Wealth Temple in Paya Terubong seeking lottery numbers, the temple committee has installed a special electronic equipment that issues four-digit numbers.

Many have been streaming to the temple since Saturday’s unveiling of a 5.5m-tall statue, which is believed to be the tallest in Penang.

Yu Feng Cai Bo Xing Jun temple chief Cheong Wai Phoe, 67, said the computerised system was installed after many devotees sought four-digit numbers from the deity.

“So, we decided to set up the system beneath the statue. Devotees can get the numbers themselves after praying by pressing a button. The numbers would then emerge in a digital display screen,” he said.

The statue stands majestically adorned with a bright red robe and carrying a jing yuan bao (gold ingot) with both hands.

Cheong said the committee took 10 years to plan and raise the RM300,000 to build the statue.

Cheong, a fortune teller and medium, happened to “know” the deity by chance 35 years ago. He, however, said the deity discouraged gambling since it is a bad habit.

“The deity had helped me through my ups and downs in my life. He will help devotees who worked hard to further their career but not via gambling,” he said.

Among those who visited the temple were colleagues Joyce Khoo, 60, May Yee, 51, Jacklyn Thum, 46, Anna Chow, 52, and Koay Bee Sim, 50, all from Penang.

“We decided to pay homage and pray for blessings after reading about the statue in the newspapers. All of us have asked for numbers and we hope we can strike it big,” Thum said excitedly.

The temple is located in 1252-N Paya Terubong (turn in from the route next to SJK(C) Kong Min Cawangan Kedua). It opens daily and admission is free.
