Thieves cart away ATM with RM150,000
By SARBAN SINGH
SEREMBAN: Thieves carted away yet another automated-teller machine (ATM) from a bank in Seremban 2 early Friday and escaped with some RM150,000 in cash.
The thieves were believed to have entered the bank's premises between 3.15am and 4am after smashing open a glass door.
Seremban OCPD ACP Saiful Azly Kamarudin said the suspects, believed to be in a group of three, also deactivated the alarm system during the heist.
"A bank customer who went to withdraw money from the bank at about 6.50am was the first to report the incident," he told reporters here.
Saiful Azly said police recovered the empty ATM along the Seremban-Labu trunk road at about 11am but without the loot.
It could not be immediately established how the robbers managed to prise away the ATM.
"The robbers sprayed paint on the CCTV system the moment they gained entry into the area where the ATM and other machines were situated," he said, adding that the bank's alarm system went off but was immediately de-activated.
It is learnt that there was no guard on duty at the time of the incident.
Saiful Azly said police also found a hammer at the scene of the crime which was believed to have been used to break the main glass door to the bank.
The case was being investigated under section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum 10 years' imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.
There have been several other recent incidents of thieves breaking into ATMs or carting them away, leading banks to reconsider the siting the machines in unsafe areas.
