PM reminds people to uphold racial, religious, cultural unity

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has reminded all Malaysians to continue to strongly protect the country's success in uniting the people of various races, religions and cultures in the country.

The Prime Minister said this was to ensure that harmony and prosperity in Malaysia continued to be preserved for the benefit of the future generation.

"This diversity in the country's socio-culture is the country's main asset and must be preserved and expanded under the 1Malaysia concept," he said in his message in the Malaysia Day souvenir programme to be celebrated in Sarawak on Sunday.

In addition, he also called on all Malaysians to look back at the intention and aspirations of past leaders who had acted maturely and with far-sightedness.

He said the success of the past leaders had enabled the people today to enjoy all the progress achieved.

In SIBU, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the Sarawak government wanted to see Najib leading the country after the 13th general election.

He said the Sarawak Barisan Nasional would deliver the mandate so that the Prime Minister could further develop the state and bring continued prosperity to the people.

He said this at a dinner attended by Najib, his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and over 500 longhouse chiefs and community leaders from the Sibu, Lanang and Sarikei parliamentary constituencies and Barisan elected representatives here Saturday.

Najib, accompanied by Rosmah, are here for a two-day visit and will also visit Bintulu Sunday to officiate at the national-level Hari Malaysia hosted by the state and held in Bintulu at its old airport site in the evening.

Taib, who is also the state Barisan chairman, said the state was very confident of winning the coming parliamentary election.

"In the last two to three years, the opposition had talked about capturing the state and the federal governments because they were going to bring changes which the people wanted," he said.

By now, he said the people had realised that the opposition could not deliver what was promised.

"The end result is they will prefer to believe Najib more than the opposition who have been speaking less than the full truth about him and the Barisan.

"I have great hope the people of Sibu will come back and appreciate what the Barisan government is like," he said. - Bernama
