Party picks Nogeh for Mas Gading constituency
KUCHING: A senior government officer has been nominated by SPDP to contest in Mas Gading in the general election.
Anthony Nogeh, 55, who is the deputy general manager of Sarawak Land and Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Salcra), was yesterday named as the candidate by president Tan Sri William Mawan.
“His name has been submitted to the Prime Minister for his consideration,” he told reporters after chairing the party’s supreme council meeting here.
Touching on Henry Jinep who was in the running for the candidacy, Mawan said: “Henry Jinep is giving way as a sign of unity. We are very grateful to Henry.”
Mas Gading incumbent Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe, a former SPDP vice president, had quit the party last year together with three other SPDP elected representatives when they failed to resolve their differences with Mawan.
He is now part of the BN Club which was formed by the former SPDP leaders. Dr Tiki, who has been the MP since 1999, is a former deputy Federal minister and the current National Service Training Council chairman. He has expressed his wish to defend the seat for a fourth term.
In the last parliamentary elections, Dr Tiki won with a majority of 4,301 votes in a four-cornered fight. It is likely that the seat will again see a multi-cornered fight with DAP possibly contesting the seat for Pakatan Rakyat.
Asked on SPDP’s other parliamentary seats Bintulu (held by incumbent Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing), Baram (Jacob Dungau Sagan) and Saratok (Jelaing Mersat), Mawan said progress and preparations were going smoothly.
