Five killed in car crash after Merdeka Day countdown in Tuaran

KOTA KINABALU: A Malaysia Day gathering turned tragic when five people were killed and three others critically injured in a car crash after midnight. The five - Saiman Jamin, 51, Ramsin Taminsin, 59, SitiRuni Tarawi, 55, Asan Hassan Jimi, 55, and Taripan Tamin, 53, including two couples - were killed at Malaysia Day countdown organised by Pakatan Rakyat in Tuaran. The dead are all from Beaufort and died on the spot near the Indah Permai traffic light junction in Sepanggar about 20 minutes from thecity.

The five were on their way home after the countdown when an oncoming car swerved into their lane and collided with their vehicle.

It is believed that the driver of the oncoming car lost control of his vehicle after an MPV, that was tailgating him, bumped into his car.

Kota Kinabalu City police chief, Assist Comm JautehDikun said the driver of the tailgating vehicle fled but was found by policemen in Taman Bukit Sepanggar not far from the accident scene. Meanwhile, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman extended his condolences to the family of the dead.
