PLUS looking at areas to locate more R&R stops
By EDMUND NGO
BUKIT GANTANG: PLUS Malaysia Bhd is currently studying strategic locations to build more Rest and Service Areas (R&R) along the North-South Expressway (NSE).
Its managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Noorizah Abd Hamid said the high traffic volume during festive seasons have strained the existing 18 R&R areas along the NSE.
"However, we face land constraints. If we want to build new R&R areas along the stretch, we have to discuss the land acquisition matters with the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA).
"For now, we will upgrade existing R&R areas that need to sustain higher capacity of highway users," she said in a press conference after presenting the PLUS Merdeka Best Decorated Rest Area award to the winners, Bukit Gantang Lay-By (South bound) here on Sunday.
Noorizah added that one of the stretches that was being studied was the Rawang to Tapah northbound stretch.
"The stretch is about 110km but there are only a few lay-by, so we are planning to have one R&R in between the two rest areas.
"It costs around RM15mil to RM20mil to construct an R&R and this is not inclusive yet of the soil treatment costs," she said.
