GEORGE TOWN: Two relatives, who were returning from a friend's engagement ceremony, were killed Monday when their car went out of control and plunged from the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu elevated highway here.

A. Rames, 28, who was married three months ago, and J. Kavithiran Rajen, 19, died on the spot in the 3.30am incident.

As the car was badly wrecked, a team of firemen spent about an hour to cut open the mass of twisted metal to extricate the bodies, which were pinned to their seats.

Timur Laut police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said the bodies were sent to the Penang General Hospital.

He said the duo were returning to their home in Bukit Tengah, Seberang Perai after attending the ceremony in Air Itam when the car went out of control and plunged from the elevated highway.

Meanwhile, the deceased's uncle, M. Raghu, said he was "devastated" as he lost two nephews in a single accident.

"Rames got married just three months ago. I do not know how to break the sad news to his wife as she is still under the impression he is at his friend's house for the engagement," he said. - Bernama
