Woman shot dead, son hacked in clash
SUNGAI PETANI: A woman rubber tapper was shot dead and her son injured after they were attacked by a group of men near their house in Ladang Bukit Lembu, Gurun, Monday night.
K. Kalyani, 57, took a bullet in a cheek during the 11pm incident that occured while she was resting in front of the house with her husband and other members of her family.
Her husband, M. Thannimalai, 63, said several men on motorcycles and in cars arrived near their house and started fighting.
"I heard a gunshot but did not realise that my wife was hit until she collapsed and started to bleed profusely," he said when approached at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here Tuesday.
He said their son, Kathiraven, 23, was injured after he was hacked during the incident. Kathiraven has been admitted to the hospital.
"We have no enemies and do not owe people money. I did not expect such a thing to happen and result in the death of my wife," said Thannimalai, who has three other children.
Two others who were also injured in the incident have been admitted to the hospital.
Kedah CID chief ACP Mohd Zakaria Ahmad said police were summoned at 11.45pm over a fight involving 15 to 20 men in Ladang Bukit Lembu.
"The fight started by the roadside and an injured individual tried to help a relative involved in the fight but the car he was in skidded and he was dragged out of the vehicle and hacked," he said.
"The group then entered the housing estate and one of the men fired a shot which hit a cheek of a woman. Her son was hacked with a sharp object," he said.
He said the woman collapsed and died on the spot while three injured men were sent to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital.
"We are investigating the motive for the attack. We believe it involves drugs and several other things.
"It is a local group and we know the identity of several suspects based on information provided by witnesses," he said. - Bernama
