MCA to hold nationwide briefings on Chinese school issues

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA Youth will hold nationwide briefings on Chinese education issues from today until next Monday, said its central committee member Chong Sing Woon.

He said the national briefing would kick off in Malacca today followed by Perak, Terengganu, Kedah, Johor, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

The briefing, said Chong, would also seek public feedback on the National Education Blueprint.

“There have been some questions and debate, especially on the standard of Bahasa Malaysia in Chinese schools for Primary Four to Six.

“We would like to hear more feedback from the public and grassroots,” he said after a MCA Youth exco meeting yesterday.

He said MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, who is also the Deputy Education Minister, would attend the national briefing if his schedule permits.

Chong said MCA Youth vice-chairman Datuk Yoo Wei How had also been appointed to lead a campaign to raise RM1mil for SMK Chong Hwa in Kuantan.

He also described a signature petition by the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong), which portrayed Chinese education as “dying out” and demanded Dr Wee's resignation, as misleading.

The petition, which was written in Mandarin, had not been accurately translated into Bahasa Malaysia, he said.

“Even the title 926 Gerakan Bantahan' is wrong. It should be translated as Gerakan menyelamatkan pendidikan Cina yang semakin pupus,” he said, expressing disappointment that it was misleading for those who could not read Mandarin and did not truly understand what they were signing.
