Psych test for woman who threw her baby
SHAH ALAM: The 20-year-old woman who threw her newborn baby girl from the third floor of a flat here will undergo psychological evaluation.
Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the woman was currently receiving medical treatment while under police custody at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.
“We will refer her for psychological evaluation and counselling at the same hospital to determine her mental state at the time of the incident,” he said at the state police headquarters.
He said police were also tracing the whereabouts of the woman's boyfriend.
“We have taken statements from the woman's relatives and neighbours,” he said, urging the woman's boyfriend to come forward to give his statement at the nearest police station.
It was reported yesterday that the newborn was still alive when she was flung out from the Desa Mentari flats unit on Sunday.
Post-mortem results revealed that the baby died of severe head injuries consistent with falling from a height.
Police remanded the woman for seven days and the case is being investigated as a murder. The woman was not married and gave birth on her own while alone at home.
It is learnt that the woman's family told the police they were unaware that she was pregnant.
Those with information are urged to contact 03-2052-9999 or the nearest police station.
Meanwhile, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali expressed sadness over the incident.
“It's very sad that an innocent baby was thrown away just like that,” she said after launching the “Petronas Know Our Children” programme, organised by Petronas and drug treatment and rehabilitation NGO Pengasih Malaysia.
“We're not animals who don't love our children. Every child must be wanted by both husband and wife, father and mother,” she added.
