Big Korean craze in Little India
GEORGE TOWN: Traders in Little India are looking to ride the K-pop wave by innovating their street food Gangnam Style.
Stall operators said they were inspired after watching the Gangnam Style moves from Sony K-pop National Showdown's northern region champion “Parazee the Showroom” and ZXC Theatre Troupe in Market Street.
Mohd Ghani Gadameera, 46, who makes Kedai Kopi Rahim's signature teh tarik said he had heard the song on the radio.
In the groove: Parazee and ZXC members dancing to the tune of Gangnam-style while Mohd Ghani makes his signature teh tarik in front of his stall in Lebuh Pasar, Penang. “Maybe I can do some of the moves while preparing my teh tarik to attract customers,” he said.
M.A. Sulaiman Penang Special Curry Puff seller Shariman Mohd Mydin, 24, said a “Gangnam Style curry puff” could be in the making.
“We now sell egg, sardine, potato and chicken curry puffs so maybe we can introduce a new filling Gangnam Style. I must discuss the recipe with my grandfather who owns the stall first,” he said.
Parazee choreographer who only wanted to be known as Tarzan, said the group was in the midst of producing a Gangnam Style dance video to promote the island's attractions and people.
The video, to be uploaded tomorrow, will feature places like the airport and the state's ferries.
On Aug 29, a Gangnam Style video collaboration between Parazee and the ZXC drew thousands of “likes” on social networking sites like Facebook after it was uploaded. It has chalked up over 3,500 views since it was posted on ZXC's blog.
ZXC producer, who only wanted to be known as Poon, said the group was surprised at the attention the video has received.
“We made the video with Parazee's help to promote our drama camp for secondary school students in December, not realising that it would be shared on so many sites online.”
The clip on zaoxinchang.blogspot.com was filmed around the inner city's heritage landmarks including the 211-year-old Goddess of Mercy Temple, clanhouse jetties and Komtar.
