Najib hints of November polls
By MUGUNTAN VANAR
SANDAKAN: The favourite number 11 is playing in the mind of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as he gave a broad hint that elections could be held by year-end, possibly November.
Though not coming out right with a clear indication, the Prime Minister said this year was as unique as 11 and many events marking the year.
He said Umno was 66 years old this year , Malaysia was marking its 55th year of Merdeka and Sabah Umno was 22 years old.
Najib accompanied by Musa (left) and Pandikar Amin (right) at Hari Raya Open House in Kampung Rampayan Laut in Kota Belud These numbers, he noted reflected the 11, if it was to be multiplied with 11.
“Six times 11 equals 66, five times 11 equals 55 and 2 times 11 equals 22. The 11 factor appears in all, it is unique and good,” Najib told party members without spelling out if he was looking at a November date for the 13th general election.
The Prime Minister said this at the joint opening of five Umno divisions Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Batu Sapi, Beluran and Libaran delegates meeting here Sunday.
Asking the party members if they were ready to defend Sabah as Umno and Barisan Nasional's fixed deposit state, he said that every time he came to Sabah he received a tremendous welcome and was confident that they would give their vote to Barisan when the time comes.
“Umno is strong in Sabah. If this is the picture, we will get resounding support from the people here,” he said.
He urged all members to work for the party and not look at ethnicity as it would divide and weaken the party.
He said prior to independence the British adopted a divide and rule approach by allowing for the formation of various ethnic groups and Umno played a role in uniting the people.
"We don't need selfish members who want to fill their pockets and protect their positions. These people can leave,” he said, adding that "leaders come and go but the party stays."
“No leader is bigger then the party, what is strong is the party. Najib is not strong, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman is not strong, our strength is in Umno and Barisan Nasional,” he said in urging members to maintain unity and sacrifice for the party.
