Hisham: Home Ministry probing hoisting of Malaysian flags in south Thailand

By EMBUN MAJID

SUNGAI PETANI: The Home Ministry and its Thai counterpart will investigate an incident when Malaysian flags were hoisted after a bombing in southern Thailand.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said although the reason behind the raising of the Jalur Gemilang was not known, the Government viewed the matter seriously.

“This involves cross border criminal activities and we have a special unit to investigate the incident.

“We cannot reveal the details yet,” he said after opening the Merbok Umno Division delegates meeting here.

A wire report on Saturday said suspected insurgents burn Thai flags and raised Malaysian flags after a coordinated operation Friday across Thailand's Muslim dominated south that also saw the militants plant bombs that wounded six soldiers.

The unrest came on the anniversary of the 1989 founding of an umbrella separatist group that combined four Thai separatist movements, as well as the anniversary of Malaysia's independence from British rule.

On another issue, he said PKR should not blame Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak unless they have proof over the attack on a bus used by the party for the Jelajah Rakyat Merdeka campaign.

"It's also not rational for PKR to accuse Umno of hiring people to step on the photographs of Najib and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

"We can claim that the attack on the bus was committed by people hired by PKR. It is easy to blame others but where is the proof? We have laws so let the authority investigate,” he said.
