Issue foreign workers with special ID cards, says contractors association

BUTTERWORTH: Foreign workers should be given special identification cards for better management of the workforce, the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association has suggested.
The cards, bearing barcode or electronic chip details of the worker and employer, should ideally be made mandatory for all workers and issued by the Construction Labour Exchange Centre Berhad (CLAB).
The cards would come in handy when the police or Immigration officers conduct spot checks to weed out the illegals, said the association's deputy president Datuk Mohamed Fadzill Hassan
"Sometimes the workers' passports and work permits are kept by the employers.
"They can instead show the cards to indicate they are legally employed," he said after opening a forum organised by CLAB in Prai on Thursday.
Mohamed Fadzill said the workers' employment details as provided by CLAB could also be regularly updated with the latest information on the worker.
CLAB is the authorised agency under the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) to supply foreign workers for the construction industry.
Since its started operations in 2004, CLAB had brought in more than 33,000 foreign labourers from 10 countries.
