By RASHITHA A. HAMID
SUBANG JAYA: The store of a school here caught fire Thursday morning, forcing more than a thousand students and teachers to evacuate the premises.
The incident occured at about 9.50am while students at SMK USJ 13 were in their classrooms.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohd Sani Harul said they received a call at 9.58am, alerting them of the fire.
Twenty-one firemen were deployed and arrived at the scene 10 minutes later, he added.
He said the firemen took about 20 minutes to put out the blaze and stop it from spreading to other parts of the school.
"The entire store was destroyed in the blaze but no one was injured in the incident," he said when contacted, adding that they were investigating the cause of the fire.
It is learnt that all the school's extra-curriculum material was kept in the store.
There were 973 students and 63 teachers in the school at the time and they were all sent back home.
The school's authorities closed the school for the day to avoid any further incidents.
